Gavin Plumb Convicted of Plotting to Kidnap, Rape, and Murder Holly Willoughby
Plumb’s twisted scheme was meticulously detailed in court, revealing his creation of an “abduction kit” containing metal cable ties, handcuffs, a ball gag, and a blindfold. He had even scouted Willoughby’s home address and searched for abandoned buildings where he could hold her captive. As part of his preparations, Gavin Plumb ordered chloroform online, deceitfully claiming it was for cleaning a stain.
Prosecutors portrayed Gavin Plumb as a dangerous individual driven by an obsession with Willoughby. Thousands of images of the presenter were found on his devices, along with sexualized messages about her exchanged with another person. This wasn’t Plumb’s first run-in with the law, either; his history of violence against women includes a 12-month suspended sentence in 2006 for attempting to force two stewardesses off a train using a fake gun and a 32-month jail sentence in 2008 for threatening two teenage girls with a knife-like instrument.
During the trial, it became clear that Gavin Plumb had been plotting the attack for years. The judge described him as a “dangerous, predatory individual” who carefully planned a “depraved and violent attack.” The court was also informed about the bravery of Plumb’s past victims, who supported the case against him, highlighting the extent of his violent tendencies.
Holly Willoughby broke her silence following the guilty verdict, praising the bravery of Plumb’s other victims who came forward and supported the case. In her statement, she also expressed her gratitude to the undercover officer in the US who alerted authorities to the threat and to Essex Police for their diligent work. Additionally, she thanked the jury for their service in the criminal justice system.
As Gavin Plumb awaits his sentencing on July 12, prosecutors will seek a restraining order and a sexual harm prevention order against him. The gravity of his actions has left a lasting impact on all those involved, underscoring the critical importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting potential victims from such heinous crimes.
