Joe Bonsall, the longtime tenor of the legendary country music group The Oak Ridge Boys, passed away on July 9, 2024, at the age of 76. He succumbed to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a devastating neuromuscular disorder that he had been battling privately for over four years.

Joe Bonsall’s journey with The Oak Ridge Boys began in 1973, and for over 50 years, his distinctive voice became synonymous with the group’s iconic sound. The Oak Ridge Boys achieved remarkable success during his tenure, securing 17 #1 hits on the Billboard Country Songs chart and three #1 albums on the Billboard Country Albums chart. Bonsall’s vocals shone brightly on timeless classics like “Elvira,” “Bobbie Sue,” and “American Made.”
His contributions to country music were recognized with inductions into the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame, affirming his place as a cherished figure in the industry.
Earlier this year, in January 2024, Bonsall made the difficult decision to retire from touring due to the physical toll of ALS. Despite his health challenges, he expressed immense gratitude for the unwavering support from his bandmates, crew, and loyal fans. His departure marked the end of an era for The Oak Ridge Boys, but his legacy continues to resonate.
In accordance with Joe Bonsall’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, he requested that those who wish to honor his memory consider making donations to ALS research organizations such as The ALS Association and the Vanderbilt Medical Center ALS and Neuroscience Research Center.
