The National Wax Museum in Dublin has decided to withdraw and remake a waxwork of the late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor after facing significant public criticism over its poor likeness. The museum unveiled the Sinead O’Connor waxwork on Thursday, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of O’Connor’s passing at age 56. However, many reacted with shock and disappointment, including O’Connor’s brother John, who said the Sinead O’Connor waxwork bore no resemblance to her and looked “hideous.”
Sinead O’Connor Waxwork Faces Backlash, Set for Immediate Redesign
In a statement, the museum acknowledged that the current Sinead O’Connor waxwork did not meet their high standards or the expectations of O’Connor’s devoted fans. They agreed the figure failed to capture her unique presence and essence as intended.
The museum emphasized O’Connor’s immeasurable impact on music and stated their goal has always been to honor her in the most fitting and respectful manner. They are now committed to creating a new Sinead O’Connor waxwork that better reflects her true spirit and iconic image, with the project to begin immediately.
O’Connor’s brother John suggested that if people wanted to commemorate her memory, a statue in Dublin would be more appropriate. He questioned how such a misrepresentation could occur given the abundance of visual references available to accurately depict her appearance.
The museum’s director, Paddy Dunning, a longtime friend of O’Connor, took responsibility for the decision to launch the flawed Sinead O’Connor waxwork and assured it was not done for publicity. He emphasized the need to cancel the statue and remodel it, vowing to do better in the future.
As the museum moves forward with the new project, fans of Sinéad O’Connor remain hopeful that the revised Sinead O’Connor waxwork will truly capture the essence of the beloved singer and do justice to her lasting legacy.
