Typhoon Gaemi Strikes Taiwan: Deadliest Storm in Eight Years

Typhoon Gaemi, known as Carina in the Philippines, made a powerful and devastating landfall in Taiwan on Wednesday evening as a Category 4 storm. With maximum sustained winds reaching 144 mph (227 km/h), it became the strongest typhoon to hit the island in eight years. The impact was severe, resulting in at least 25 deaths and over 220 injuries across Taiwan and the Philippines. In Taiwan, a woman tragically lost her life due to a falling tree, and a cargo ship sank off the southern coast, leaving nine crew members missing. Rescue efforts have been hampered by the fierce winds and low visibility.

The storm also intensified the seasonal monsoon rains in the Philippines, causing flooding and landslides that claimed at least 22 lives. Additionally, an oil tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of fuel sank off the Philippine coast, raising concerns about a potential oil spill.

In response to the typhoon, Taiwan took extensive precautionary measures, shutting down schools and businesses, and canceling hundreds of flights for the second consecutive day on Thursday. Over 500,000 households experienced power outages, and residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas. China also prepared for Gaemi’s arrival by suspending flights, trains, and boat sailings on its eastern coast.

The sinking of the cargo ship Fu Shun off the southern coast of Taiwan added to the tragedy. The 1985-built, 56-meter-long Tanzanian-flagged vessel capsized around 19 nautical miles off Kaohsiung City early Thursday morning. The nine crew members, who were from Myanmar, abandoned the sinking ship in life jackets, but rescuers have been unable to reach them due to the stormy weather conditions. Taiwan’s National Coast Guard Administration has stated that the search operation will commence as soon as the weather improves.
